Rock Sugar, a musical cocktail
This is silly. This is rock. This is pop. This is a cocktail recipe. This is Rock Sugar.
Rock Sugar is a musical cocktail band, a heavily shaken mashup of 80’s top 40 hits before grunge and hip hop took over.
The star is lead singer Jess Harnell, a voiceover actor whom you heard as Wackoon the Animaniacs, Captain Hero on Drawn Together, and many, many others. His talents on screen translate to music, allowing him to pull off a James Hetfield growl and a Steve Perry croon in one chorus. The rest of the band, Chuck Duran on guitars, Alex Track on drums and Johnny Five on bass, keep up and tightly segue from one sports arena staple to another without spilling. Confused? Watch this in its entirety and come back for a drink.
Rock Sugar is playing a few gigs to support their debut album, Reimaginator, and will be opening for Steel Panther at the House of Blues Sunset Striptonight! Tickets are $15 for general admission.
Drummer Alex has a mashup shot for the 21 and older Rock Sugar fans. Have a few of these before you see them tonight and suddenly Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” will sound so much better when paired with the Eurythmics’ “Here Comes the Rain Again.”
Sugar Shock Shot
By Alex Track of Rock Sugar
- 1 shot of chilled Peach Schnapps (It will be very difficult to find Schlomo Rosenberg's brand, so any one will do)*
- 1 slice of lemon
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground coffee
- 1/2 teaspoon of sugar... naturally!
Fill shot glass with chilled Peach schnapps. Place lemon slice on shot glass. Put 1/2 teaspoon of ground coffee on one half of lemon slice and 1/2 teaspoon of sugar on the other, chill for 5 minutes, serve. Gather your closest friends and make a toast to Rock Sugar. Proceed to place lemon slice, with the coffee and sugar in mouth and chew vigorously, follow with the shot of chilled Peach schnapps and swallow. Wait 5 minutes, insert Rock Sugar disc into your CD player.... rock out!
Warning: Drink early in the evening as this will definitely amp you up... just like a Rock Sugar live show! Please drive responsibly. (try removing the lemon rind if you’re going to swallow)
The 21st century may be lacking for original content, but creative manipulation of existing material is alive and well.
* According to legend, Shlomo Rosenberg was the millionaire schnapps maker who hired Rock Sugar to play on his yacht for his 13 year-old daughter’s birthday, leading to their being stranded on an island for 20 years with nothing but rock and a teen girl’s Hello Kitty boom box and tunes for company.
